Georgia Learner’s Permit Requirements

The Department of Driver Services (DDS) in the state of Georgia has implemented a program called the Teenage & Adult Drivers Responsibility Act (TADRA), which is part of the graduated driver’s license process. The first step of being able to drive in the State of Georgia is applying for a Learner’s Permit. However, before being eligible, there are certain Georgia Learner’s Permit requirements that must be met. Failure to fulfill these requirements might result in the Department of Driver Services (DDS) to turn you away. In this article, we will discuss the different requirements and steps in detail.

As mentioned, the first step in the GDL process is a Learner’s Permit, also titled Instructional Permit. A Learner’s Permit can be acquired when a teen is at least 15 years or older, according to Georgia Learner’s Permit requirements. When going to a DDS Customer Service Center, a teen will need a parent/guardian present in order to sign the application. Aside from the documents that must be presented (which will be discussed below), a two-part exam (a vision exam and a DMV written test) must be passed. The questions in the exam cover the Georgia Driver’s Manual. The hard copy of this manual can be easily obtained from your local DDS or downloaded from the Georgia DDS website. Seeing as the exams are not by appointment, but are on a walk-in basis, it is advised that an examine be present at the DDS 30 minutes before closing time.

When applying for a Learner’s Permit, there are certain documents that must be presented:

  • 1 document that proves your Social Security Number (SSN)

  • 1 document that proves your identity

  • 2 documents that prove your Georgia residency

  • A Certificate of Attendance has to be notarized and signed; this certificate has a 30-day validation only. Those who are 18 years old and are not in school must submit a GED, a diploma from high school, enrollment proof in GED or a certification of completion from high school.

  • Pay the Learner’s Permit fee

Tests That Must be Passed at the DDS to Obtain a Learner’s Permit

As mentioned, two tests will be conducted by the Georgia state DDS, once you meet the Georgia Learner’s Permit requirements. The knowledge exam is composed of 2 parts: Road Rules and Road Signs. The vision exam is conducted by means of a mechanical device. You are allowed to wear lenses and glasses during the tests, should that be required.
